i am not leaving the dark. not ready yet. just saying. i'm actually looking around down here and getting a new vantage point. i'm beginning to understand why i am down here in a new way. hello past trauma. of course i am down here over and over again. trauma drama mama. no. it's not drama. just trauma mama. no. i don't want to be called that. but i want to let myself acknowledge it. admit it. for so long i've felt like a whiner saying this. but i'm gonna say it. i had a hard childhood. i've had some hard blows. it's hard to say this though, because i know others have had harder ones. i often tell myself, i should just shut up and feel blessed for what i do have. that's all i'm gonna say there on that, on feeling guilty for saying i had a hard time, to anyone other than my sister (s). cuz in the reality of being me, in actuality, i am traumatized. i am feeling like going back to do some more emdr type work is in my best interest. i had a mama, my mama, who couldn't keep me. back and forth i went, flying on a plane by myself, from her home to my dad's. when i was with her, i was in a home that was not healthy. cheating and lying and fighting between her and her men. and me trying to keep the peace. multiple step dads. multiple affairs i was aware of when the step dads weren't. and when i wasn't at her house, i was at my dad's house. i went from one unhealthy house to the next. my (half)sister, wasn't with me most of the time. she had been sent to live with her dad. so i weathered this craziness alone really. at 8, my mama really let me go, and i went to stay with my dad in arkansas till i was 12. i would have stayed on with him till i could flee the sad nest, and be legally emancipated, but he and my step mom were heroin users. and this was after he had been through hell and back from alcoholism. all starting in vietnam. dad and stepmom lost control completely when i was 12, and i ran away for fear of my life from my stepmom. i think she might have killed me had i not run. they were in and out of rehab during that the last two years i lived with them. i had two younger stepbrothers, and we were shuttled to weekly alanon meetings for those last two years i was there. without my grandma, my dad's mom, being there as a touchstone to wholeness and health during those years, i am scared to imagine what would have happened to me. once i ran away, my mom was feeling settled again, and decided to rescue me. so i ended up with her and her fairly-new-to-me husband in colorado. i ended up in a home that was healthier in some ways, but still, not healthy. it was sad a lot of the time for me. starting over, and being in this new home with a lack of real love was dark. as a new young woman, i was keeping my mom's secrets from her husband, and feeling deeply wounded by it all. somehow i made friends, and that was where i found some light in my last years of being under the helm in someone else's home. to add to this bit of formative trauma, my first kid had severe birth trauma. responding to his trauma, i became traumatized in a whole new way. i've gone on for all of his life now stitching up the tears for both of us. and then, when my firstborn was 2 and my second born was 3 months old, my dad died. his liver seized by cancer. it was another huge trauma to see my dad through his death at 58, when i was 27. huge. i can tell the stories of how my parents became the ways that they were, and understand it all in a way, that at least tells my soul that i was loved, under all the misfortune and poor decisions they made, their hearts were good. but right now, i am not needing to know that they loved me. i am needing to acknowledge the trauma that i've suffered. the hard hits. i've done years of therapy. like ummmmm, 17. my whole adult life, i've been in therapy. i've done loads of emdr, but it's been about 8 years, i think since i immersed myself in emdr. since then i've done many birth trauma workshops with my son, and then many for me as well. embodiment workshops in new mexico that gave me perspective i'm gonna be eternally grateful for. but it's not enough. these kinds of deep formative trauma experiences need attending to for the long haul. breaks from working it out are good. breaks are fine. but getting back to the work of peeling away trauma layers so that i can get closer to my whole self is something i have to do. periodically. i'm lucky, cuz i know therapists who are really good at this stuff. i have a sister and friends who are really good at understanding, relating, and loving. i have a husband who is an earthly god, and has stood by me through the whole of my adult life, well we met when i was 19, while i've peeled layer after layer away. and he's peeled his own layers off at the same time, so we've made quite a team. i have three bright magical children who i just don't even know how to feel worthy of, so instead, i feel dumbfounded and crazy ass lucky. or something. i am crazy lucky. and i am crazy traumatized. as a lot of us are. and today, with the help of a therapist, i got the perspective, again, that i still have trauma buried deep within. still. i can do more healing. and i will. feeling into the hardness of the hits i've taken is somehow very calming and affirming. like..., ok. this is why i feel like i do. i didn't do anything wrong. i just got hurt badly. understanding why i struggle, takes such a load off. and it's odd that i have to be reminded. i mean, how can i forget? but i do somehow. or i go on with my life thinking, maybe, now, i will be free of the wounds, now that i've done all this therapy. freer, yes. but not really free. get back to work sweet savory self. get back to the work of tending to yourself. your healing. of acknowledging that you have been hurt. feel comforted knowing there is loving help to be had. you can be more free than this. saying that, believing that, knowing that, that actually makes me feel better. aaaaaaaaah.
and now. to change gears a bit..... i went back in the archives of this blog recently and saw that i did this once a few years ago. it made me want to do it again. love. i really hope noone takes offense in my sharing up there. somehow everything can be taken that way. but i did it for me. i needed to do that. for me. for my deep dark self.
what we wants:
miss H: magic. dark black silky slinky happy lively magic. cleanliness. loving exchanges to outnumber the hostile ones in this house. to play words with friends about 10 times a day. or more? music lessons (if i keep saying that will it happen?). to listen to more david bowie. and brian eno. to make a book of memories about pawpaw. a never ending book of memories. to lose some fear. less fear. less fear. less fear. less worry. to find some newfound love of cooking, to experience the boredom of cooking vanish and some neat creative little happy food sprite join in the bland adventures of heather's food creations, and turn that bland into grand.
miss O: time with her bears at home. time with her friends at school. to help with anything in the kitchen. to eat snacks constantly. to ice skate. to tell of her most epic dreams at the breakfast table, tales that last solidly for ten or more minutes. to be a water bender.... to watch avatar, the last airbender.
miss Z: to stitch. on the sewing machine, now that she's privy to the ways of it (!!!!). her own machine (ha! let's take it slow my dear.) to play checkers. to play with rats. or cats. to get a new baby rat. to eat sweets constantly. to ice skate. to giggle. to cackle. to be a water bender.....to watch avatar, the last airbender all the time. or to read it, or draw it.
mr. M: to laugh. to tease. to play. to get a new duck. to count his current savings over and over again. to trade 5 one dollar bills for a 5 dollar bill, and then back again. repeatedly. he's grasping the equality of the seemingly large obvious differences there (i did have five bills, now i have one ??? how is that the same?). to go on a weekend overnight snowboarding trip with his dad. to watch avatar the last airbender, all day long.
mr. D: to drink coffee. to make coffee. to make love. to swim. to sleep through the night, to be free from insomnia. to laugh. to cry. to do lots of face chat and phone chat with his mama. to watch movies at night after the kids are asleep. to have his gelato pint project grow wings and fly.
LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. love in the dark.

for my part, i am thankful and glad and honored you shared all this. and on the point on wondering if anyone minds...if they do...well, i was gonna say "fuck 'em" but perhaps that's unkind. i just like to remember that everyone is responsible for themselves, and if someone doesn't like what you (or i) have written, they can stop reading and surf elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteyour story makes me want to scoop you up and hold your hand and say, "i want you.". not that i can re-parent you, but the mama in me wants to. yup, that's definitely trauma...but isn't it weird how we forget? i think because in some ways, our past is OURS, and it feels familiar and sometimes normal. when i work with clients who are traumatized, sometimes the first work is about helping them see that they were indeed traumatized! it's so heartbreaking, and no doubt your parents loved you and were doing the best they could...but considering that was "their best" it's pretty clear how not ok their own lives were. and i don't think your job is to understand or forgive them, and it sounds like you already have. now you get to heal, and i don't think you owe anyone an apology.
one other thing i have realized about working with trauma, both with myself and with clients, is that there is no silver bullet, no magic pill. if a lifetime of therapy is what it takes, then that's what it takes. it's so so good to take breaks...i'm coming off one myself after all the grief work i did last year...but i've found that if i try to take a permanent break, that's when i lose the thread, i forget that there is trauma and life begins to get unbalanced and wonky. EMDR is the bomb, and so is a new method called brainspotting. i'm glad you have a resource for the emdr.
anyway, you don't need my novel of writing here, but it's really just all a long winded way of saying "i see you. i SEE you. and i love you. and i'm here and so is my heart." xoxoxo
i'm thankful. this is like my pseudo women's group i'm realizing. my virtual internet women's group. how nice that i have this to keep me connected to the stuff. of relating and sharing and all that this is. i don't need your novel. but i like it. i prefer it. this is the first time i think i've really realized that this may be a lifetime that is full of therapy. there really may be no end for me. and it's not bad. in fact, maybe that is nice and preferable as welll. your understanding of the past becomes ours, and somewhat normalized, is so true feeling for me and how i forget that i'm a little skewed when it comes to psychological health. that's not quite the right way of saying it. but that's my best right now. and that's so helpful to remember, here and there, oh yeah, i didn't get the best start. aaaaaaark. i want to run away. thank goodness i paid attention to that need to run and i got myself on the track team in high school. running. yumm. it can be so nice. satisfies some deep desire to run away. our bodies feel some resemblance of it. instead tonight, i sit by the heater and type my thanks for your correspondence. love.
Deletei was reading this...when i got to the source of your first trauma, i felt like the wind had been knocked out me "not you! No! This is what happened to you?!". I know too many children who are in something similar to your childhood situation - what resonated with me was the secrets, shame, lying and anger (impotent drug anger - so friggin stupid and harmful)...those are the things i despise parents doing to their kids. Secrets. Shame. Lying. Violence. Even the nicest smiley faced parents can teach their children to be ashamed of themselves by encouraging lying and secrets. Get's me real mad. I read Mary's comment too, which reminded me that I also have some of my own olden-day shit that i need to address...it's hard for me to admit (give in to/be vulnerable) that my own trauma is worth addressing though. Even now, I'm thinking, "it's nothing, what are you whining for? You're tough". silly me. I know it's there alright. Take care Heather, you're worth every ounce of care. xx
ReplyDeletehi teeny. yes. thanks for sharing that you have your own stuff. i know we all do. that's why i almost feel weird and wrong for even bringing it up. we all have something. i think? but it is really nice to tell it, sometimes, and it's really really nice to hear it too. it's not good to feel alone. it is so worth it to address it. it takes me seeing another contemplating it for me to see that so clearly. so thank you so much! i'm sorry to knock the wind out of you though. i should have a disclaimer at the top of the blog. i get so freaking gritty sometimes. beware. thanks teens, do people call you teens?
DeleteYES! I LOVE IT that you call me Teens. My Dad and one of my brothers call me Teens and occasionally Peanut. And i'm sorry to rave on about myself on your blog. And I know you're gritty, i expect that, and i usually take my time to be sensitive when i post here....but this time i just got this image of you in all of that madness as a kid, a teenager, a young woman...and i got all of the sadness all at once. Don't feel bad for sharing, i think no less of you, i don't think you're diminishing anyone elses stuff because you shared....your stuff. Your source of darkness is really really awful, I wish noone would have to go through that. i haven't faced any such trauma. And you have remarkable character to be here writing this. Brave woman.
Deletecool!! my friend teens! you are not raving on here. don't say sorry.... no way. ha! that is funny to me that you expect my grit. hahaha!!! thank you for your encouragement. it is what heals. seriously heals. thank you so much.
DeleteO. M. G. yeah, you've had trauma dear Heather. I'm shocked. I can see why that book glass castle (right?) resonated with you. CRAZY life. You have every right to own that trauma. It's big. You are deserving of so much happiness in your life. I'm glad you told your story. It truly touches me what an amazing person and mother and wife you are. I wish I could give you a big hug right now. Much love, Kyndale
ReplyDeletethank you friend. you are so right with the glass castle. i love that you thought of that. thank you so much for kind-of putting it in perspective. i love friends. love them so much. and blog friends in such a special deep way, especially these days. thank you for saying you're glad i told my story. it's hard for me to even claim it as my story. i feel your hug actually. so nice.

DeleteThat darkness that you're enveloped by can hold you just as warm and tight as anything.stay there if you need..you can dig just as deep in the darkness as you can anywhere. My God, girl- you have had some knocks. You know what drew me to you and these writings..this space..however long ago? You're utter realness. I am amazed at the fierce real rawness that just screams from you. You are a warrior. A badass, creative, mama warrior. Imagine us- these women in this space you've allowed us- holding you up in all sides.
ReplyDeletehi angie. yes on digging deep and feeling held down there. it is so so true. somehow sometimes more comforting than being in all that light up above. the dark down under really can hold us. scary. and true. thank you for those words. god. they are nice and reaffirming. i've allowed you all in, and you have all come. it is such a gift. thank you so much.
Deleteoh my darlin'
ReplyDeleteso, i never got a chance to comment on your last post and you know, i'm really glad i came back to because i read this one instead.
earlier today i started to think about the tooth fairy and how it's such a pain in the ass sometimes and then i had this whole scenario play out in my head of "bad parents" getting drunk and passing out and the kid flipping their pillow over to find their tooth in the morning.... don't ask me... i'm off my rocker.... but maybe my mind wandered there because of alizah and the constant struggles i'm having with her and the situation at her dad's. there are so many times i just want to fall to my knees in defeat because his negative power so often chokes any positive power i have out. i swear to god you just gave me a nudge forward. beautiful and perfect and exposing so much information made all the abstractions come into focus. it all makes sense. fuck faking it. jesus.
on the other hand, what we wants = pure deliciousness.
and hubs was looking at a pic of little o today and commented on how cute she is. and your babes are so lucky to have you for a mother. all this work you do is for you, right? but really for them i think. xo
sista. yeah. that tooth fairy sad story idea is a sad reality for too many i think. you are so compassionate to even ponder on that. wow. i am so so happy to have nudged you forward and helped you in some way in holding your sweet girl in the best way possible. what we wants is fun. i like doing that. gonna do it more. you can too if you want!! o was so frickin cute yesterday wasn't she. mmmmmmm.
Deletethanks love. yeah. you are completely right on. i feel like my children inspire me to heal. for sure. it's such a beautiful relationship thing. same with all of us devoted mamas. same. same. same.
you think david is an earthly god....well you are certainly a goddess! and it is not luck that your kids are yours.....they are bright and magical because you are. i am so thankful that you share your inner life here.....i always identify with you so much when you talk about the darkness and sadness. i definitely did not have your experience....how painful. and wow.....the strength you have to do all the healing work and be your highest self for the beautiful family you have. i would love to hug you also, and i hope that you can feel my love in this virtual space. you were even in my dream last night....and i woke up and pondered what to write, as i always feel inferior as a little old 'commenter'....not a fellow blog writer. but i would love to be part of your group here at dark and macaroni!
ReplyDeletethank you kim. what lovely words you gave to me. aaaah. so lovely to be seen that way. yeah. i really do share inner life stuff here, huh? i just can't help it. it's what interests me a lot of the time. funny that i made it into your dream. i wish i could see what it was like!! i'm glad you comment. i always am! thanks for being willing to say what you say here! it keeps me going with sharing it all in some sense. knowing it helps others sometimes, somehow. cuz i do ponder it. why i share? why not just keep it to myself. i don't have a good answer. i do it for the joy it brings. (thanks ani ) and because i've gotten so much joy from others' sharing. that is nice, to identify that, down to the core, why i do this weird experience of a blog. for the joy.
DeleteJust processing this and feeling for you. Supporting you in your work and bravery. I like you am lucky to have made a family situation that is completely different from the one I grew up in. It's hard hard hard trying not to repeat those patterns. Loving all the comments from this virtual support group.
Deleteyes. ditto andrea. it is hard hard hard and so important. i support you too. and yes, the comments are so love~filled. so awesome.
