in october, on the very last warm day before our first snow, i gave our two hives their insulating panels. before i did that, though, i put that built out honey comb, into our second swarm's hive. that swarm came to us later in the season and their hive might not have been full enough to feed them through the winter properly. so their neighboring hive gifted them. how sweet they are.

it's only half full of honey comb. a little brood there in the middle. but that's cool. it's perfect honey. we tasted it.
i am so grateful for these bees. before we left on our trip out east, i went to the hives and gave them a gentle tap. i just wanted to say bye, and hear them buzz a little. just to check in. you know, like how you check to make sure your baby is breathing when asleep. each hive gave me a sweet buzz, just loud enough to hear with my ear up to the wood. i hope they are enjoying their restful months. in that eery, etherial, dreamy space of this time of year in the northern hemisphere. i hope we all are tapping into that space, as we go deeper and deeper into the darkness. the time of year i was born into. in some ways, i am more comfortable, oddly, in these dark seasons. so weird. they feel like home. spring and summer, i feel like a visitor, on a splendid blissful holiday. a holiday i look forward to all fall and winter long. but i really do feel at home now, with the trees bare, my depression front and center, asking me to chill out and cozy up under the shelter of our human hive. this depression, for me, my personal unique manifestation of it, is seeming to point me in a specific direction. i am listening this year like i haven't before. it is fucking hard to sit and let go, so that all the feelings can finally flood in. once i do, i am finding i am not afraid of the slumber. the winter. the dark. oh it's so f'd. the resistance i have to stopping. it's this culture, i am sure of it. it doesn't stop for winter. no mam. well, i must resist that. i am resisting what is not me, and embracing what is me. i am eating honey, and staying warm next to my mates. and you know, our house is kind-of in the same shape as those bee hives. pretty much.
i love.
i love.
i love.
look what i just bid on.
ha!
if anything, this weird holiday is cool for waking up the gratitude in us. i just say, let's take it deeper. somehow, take it deeper.
how can this be? HOW? i think you may be psychic...
ReplyDelete1. i envy you with your buzzing beauties. that comb is so beautiful it sort of makes me hurt a little.
2. i'm also a winter baby. aren't we a special breed? no trips to the theme park for our parties...
3. and finally, i can't even express to you how spot on you are about resisting winter. oh my holy hell. getting up in the dark and dragging alizah out of bed by her ankles, then driving to school feeling like it's the middle of the night is the absolute worst. one morning i totally started daydreaming about what it would be like if the world ran on the sun's schedule. i had this whole scene playing out where people were saying things like, "i'll be there when the sun touches the treetops at dawn." or "the meeting is when the sun casts a four inch shadow from the west." i've never actually said any of this out loud though. thank you for expressing perfectly what i've been thinking my entire life.
Sometimes i think that being able to healthily survive depression...requires aLOT of feeling it. Most of my fams (incl me) have issues with anxiety. Those of us that chose not to FEEL have become drug addicts - the rest of us- get the blues sometimes and learn and move on. (i don't mean to downplay depression by calling it the blues; it's just easier for me to call it that in order for it not to seem endless) much care to you.x
ReplyDeleteHello, another winter baby here. I love a balmy evening, but the Australian summer is often shrill and scratchy and I miss the joy of sleeping with a hot water bottle (frozen versions just don't quite cut it - I know, I've tried - out of desperation, at least once every summer).
ReplyDeletePS. BEES!
PPS. WOW. Big WOW.
courtney~~ yeah. i am psychic!!! nah. just connected i guess. sometimes anyways. i love how we are often rolling along tuning in to the same themes. LOVE that. alone? nope. not really. lets plan things your way? yeah?
ReplyDeleteteeny~~ i love what you said here so much. i am so gonna reframe my thinking and reword my descriptions. blues. so much better. thanks you so much!! yeah. a few drug addicts in my family too. feeling is such hard scary work sometimes. big exhale.
tania~~ oh my gosh! your birthday is coming up again! this time i have an idea, and intention. not just intention. i'm excited! are you serious? you've slept with a frozen hot water bottle? hahaaha!!! i do feel for you. how weird to be in the summer in the winter. and how lovely. everything upside down makes for lots of creative juice right?
Hey, how are you doing?
ReplyDeleteI would love to have some bees. My son is allergic to bee stings and every time I mention it, Solomon gets a little pale. But, I'll keep working on it.
Love you!
